Clean Water for All: Village Development Program 2025 Strengthens Community and SDG Goals in Limbangan Garut

The Geophysics Student Association “Pedra” of Universitas Padjadjaran, together with the Unpad Geophysics PKM Team, has launched the 2025 Village Development Program in Cibadak-1 Hamlet, Pasirwaru Village, Blubur Limbangan District, Garut. From May to July 2025, the program focused on groundwater mapping and clean water exploration to address the community’s long-standing struggle with water scarcity.

This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the goal of ensuring access to clean water and sanitation for all.

Cibadak-1, located about 39 km from Unpad Jatinangor, often faces drought during the dry season. Despite efforts from the local Community Self-Reliance Group (KKM), chaired by Maman Suparman, solutions have been limited due to the village’s geological and geographical challenges on hilly terrain. “The area most affected is Cibadak-1 Hamlet,” explained Pasirwaru Village Head, Ita Suherman. During the dry season, clean water is delivered by fire trucks, while in the rainy season, residents rely on local springs. To keep these springs safe from contamination, the student team built protective covers.

Supervised by Dr. Budy Santoso, M.T., the program involved a dedicated student team: Muhammad Akbar Putra Mahendra (Chair), Muhammad Hafizh Fauzan Ajjauzaqi (Vice Chair), Salisa Syifaunajwa Qonitatin (Project Officer), Natasya Aulia Putri (Deputy Project Officer), Nisriinaa Nasywaa Ariefianty (Head of Externalization), Mochamad Indiana Rinaldy (Head of External Department), along with volunteers from geology and nursing departments.

The groundwater survey was carried out using the Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) method with a Schlumberger configuration, covering electrode spreads between 400–550 meters. The results identified a potential aquifer at a depth of 87–135 meters, with drilling planned to reach around 120 meters.

However, the drilling project requires a significant cost of Rp150 million. To meet this need, the students collaborated with Rumah Wakaf Foundation, Rumah Zakat Foundation, and Teladan Rasul Foundation to raise funds. On July 19, 2025, the first drilling activity and the groundbreaking for a waqf-based clean water facility took place, attended by student leaders, foundation representatives, and the village head.

Beyond water solutions, the 2025 Village Development Program also addressed public health issues. Pasirwaru Village has one of the highest stunting rates in Blubur Limbangan, according to the Garut Central Statistics Agency (BPS). To tackle this, the program included stunting prevention education and posyandu socialization, held in schools and for the wider community. The session was delivered by Syukur Hamdan Damayadi Limbong, a Nursing student.

Through these efforts, the students not only provided practical solutions to water scarcity but also contributed to achieving SDG Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation)—helping improve both quality of life and community health in Pasirwaru Village.
