Unpad’s Step in Precision Livestock Monitoring

The global livestock industry faces increasing challenges from climate change, limited land resources, and growing food demand. Responding to this, a research team—including a contributor from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad)—developed a breakthrough system presented in “An IoT-Enabled Smart System Utilizing Linear Regression for Sheep Growth and Health Monitoring.” This innovation highlights how technology can empower farmers with accurate, real-time insights to improve both productivity and animal welfare.

The system integrates Arduino and ESP32 platforms with sensors that monitor sheep weight, temperature, and humidity. Using simple linear regression, it successfully modeled the individual growth of sheep with over 99% accuracy, while sending real-time data directly to a smartphone interface. Beyond tracking growth, the system provides environmental monitoring, allowing farmers to detect early signs of health issues and intervene before problems escalate. Its practical design and easy implementation demonstrate the value of accessible, data-driven tools in modern farming.

This research directly supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2: Zero Hunger, by promoting sustainable and efficient livestock production. Through smart farming solutions like this, Unpad is contributing not only to academic advancements but also to real-world applications that strengthen food security and animal care. It is a proud step forward for the Universitas Padjadjaran in driving innovations that support a more sustainable future.
