Smart Production Planning Boosts Clothing Industry Profits and Supports Sustainable Growth

The clothing industry in Indonesia continues to expand as consumer demand—particularly from the middle class—keeps rising. To stay competitive, companies must find efficient ways to manage resources such as raw materials, capital, and time. A recent study offers a solution by applying an optimization model using the Branch and Bound method to improve production planning in garment companies.

Smarter Way to Plan Clothing Production

The research focuses on PT. GM Tactical, a garment business producing various types of pants. By using an Integer Linear Programming model solved with the Branch and Bound method, the study helps the company determine the best production plan to maximize profits while managing limited resources effectively.

The result? The company could achieve a maximum profit of IDR 9,816,560 by producing:

  • 126 units of chino pants,
  • 250 units of cargo pants, and
  • 50 units of jogger pants.

This optimized plan provides better results compared to the company’s actual production approach, proving that mathematical optimization can play a crucial role in decision-making.

Why It Matters

For garment producers, efficient production planning is not only about increasing profits but also about reducing waste and making better use of available resources. By aligning production with demand forecasts, companies can operate more sustainably and competitively.

Connection to the SDGs

This research contributes to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth – by helping businesses improve efficiency and profitability.
  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – through the use of innovative mathematical models for industrial processes.
  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – by promoting resource efficiency and minimizing waste in manufacturing.

Looking Ahead

With rising competition in the fashion and clothing industry, data-driven production planning can be a game changer. Applying optimization methods such as Branch and Bound can help Indonesian garment businesses grow more sustainably while meeting consumer demand effectively.
